The arrival of warmer weather marks the return of outdoor dining and convivial moments around the house. To best design this space, there's nothing like patio stiles. Available in numerous sizes and materials, they have become one of the essential elements to add a touch of elegance to your garden. Daring to lay tiles on your terrace or balcony is a bit like the detail that makes all the difference, the cherry on the cake. What outdoor patio stiles materials should I choose?

Coating your garden in style, patio stiles are available in several materials, each with their own particularities: wood, stone, and concrete. We have prepared a guide to help you choose the right type of slab.

Wooden slabs or duckboard

Wooden slabs, also known as duckboards, are the best option for any outdoor style. Aesthetic and comfortable, a wooden terrace is as easy to install as it is to dismantle. This means you can change a wooden deck more often than a stoneware or sandstone one, and experiment with different decor styles over the years. Additionally, installing wooden slabs is suitable for all types of terrain configurations. This type of paving is generally less expensive than others. It's therefore best if you want to save money.

Stone slabs

Stone slabs (or tiles, sandstone, stoneware, etc.) are the sturdiest ones. Stone is a raw material that brings a real authenticity to our terraces, while making them comfortable. Its biggest advantage: it ages very well, and time gives it even more charm (don't worry, this applies to you too).

Concrete slabs

Concrete slabs are made from a mixture of gravel, water, sand, and cement. Most of these slabs undergo a special treatment during their manufacture, which protects them against stains and discolouration due to the weather. In addition to making your floor surface non-slip, they have a real charm and are available in a wide range of colours and visual effects.

How to properly prepare your ground before installing slabs?

Better safe than sorry, so it's essential to take every precaution before starting to install a patio stile terrace. The goal: to prevent your terrace from warping after a few months due to an unstable base. To ensure optimal results, here are some tips not to be overlooked:

  • Make sure the ground is nice and smooth before you place a tile
  • Delineate the space that your slab terrace will occupy with marker stakes or cones.
  • Use a rot-proof felt on the soil to prevent mold and weeds (we like a green foliage, but not between our paving stones)
  • Allow for a slight slope so that rainwater does not stagnate using blocks.

Tips for maintaining terrace slabs

To extend its lifespan, you should clean your terrace once or twice a year. The steps to take depend on the type of material used for the slabs of the terrace.

  • For a wooden deck, you should apply a special wood protection oil about once a year, after cleaning the paving. To do so, use baking soda mixed with hot water and scrub the wooden deck with a brush before rinsing with clean water.
  • For a stone terrace, you should inquire about the hardness level of the stone slab chosen for its covering. Very hard materials such as sandstone or stoneware can be cleaned using a high-pressure water jet. For softer types of stone slabs, you should use a brush with water and -neutral pH soap.
  • For a concrete terrace, let a little bit of soapy water soak into each slab for 30 minutes, then scrub the surface with a brush to remove stains from each slab. If some stains persist on a slab, you can also choose abrasive sand for tiles. Avoid using acidic natural products (white vinegar, lemon, etc.) for maintaining your wood, stone, or concrete tiles, as they are too corrosive for this type of surface. And there you have it, choosing the right terrace paving no longer holds any secrets for you thanks to our special paving guide! You can now enjoy an exterior with a stylish surface in sandstone, stoneware, wood, or concrete.

Thanks to sweeek's selection of wooden slabs, you now hold all the cards. What are you waiting for to choose a covering for your terrace?
