Have you always dreamed of a garden with a unique style where you can spend quality time with your loved ones? You’ve come to the right place. The garden is now an integral part of the home and can have its own style of decoration and layout. Scandinavian, bohemian, vintage, industrial, minimalist/design, rustic or even Zen… To help you choose the right garden decor style, we’ve put together some tips that will awaken the interior designer you’ve always wanted to be, so you can create the perfect atmosphere outdoors too!
The Scandinavian style
The Scandinavian style has long since proven its worth. Better still, it’s no longer confined to your living room. For several years now, the cosy, warm feel of Nordic decor has also been making its way into your garden, much to your delight. And with its splashes of colour, it’s anything but boring!
For a Scandinavian-style look in your garden, we recommend choosing garden furniture in light wood tones, typical of Nordic design. Wicker and rattan are also ideal for creating a warm and inviting atmosphere! The colours are light, ranging from beige to grey, taupe and even white. One of the hallmarks of the Scandinavian style is furniture with tapered legs. You might therefore be tempted by this type of furniture for your garden relaxation area if you’re looking for a Scandinavian-style look for your patio or balcony. To add depth to your garden furniture, you could even repaint a small section of the house wall in a darker colour.
To jazz up these pieces of furniture and give your Scandinavian decor an even more distinctive feel, you could add a few geometric prints – on cushions, a blanket or an outdoor rug, for example. A light wood table covered with a pretty tablecloth in teal or mustard yellow will blend perfectly into a terrace or garden decorated in this style. Add a few broad-leaved green plants and some lighting for summer evenings, and you’re all set for cosy moments in your garden furniture set with Nordic charm!
The bohemian style
Fancy travelling without leaving home? The bohemian style is perfect for that! In a garden, this style – which is both cosy and chic – will make you want to stay nestled in your outdoor armchair all day long. Because the bohemian style is, above all, a garden that’s full of life and ready to welcome your guests with open arms.
For a bohemian vibe in your garden, we recommend choosing furniture in natural wood tones, with touches of cane or rattan. Neutral colours are ideal for the structure, ranging from beige to white, including brown and taupe. Add a few touches of warm colours to your scheme: rust, terracotta or wood-brown shades are perfect for enhancing your outdoor decor and giving your garden furniture a chic feel. On sofa cushions or rugs under a table, go for floral patterns that bring a boho vibe. A few bamboo plants, garlands hanging from your terracotta parasol, one or two macramé-style wall decorations, and you’re all set!
The vintage style
A true Proustian madeleine, the vintage style is ideal for your garden if you’re nostalgic for the 1950s to 1970s. It draws on the hallmarks of retro decor, a style that’s making a big comeback both inside and outside the home. The added bonus: you can recycle your grandparents’ old furniture, or hunt for vintage items at flea markets. The best way to achieve a vintage vibe without too much effort is to unearth items that have a history, for a subtle old-school touch.
Choose furniture made from raw materials, such as dark, weathered or distressed wood, and don’t skimp on rattan to create a ‘throwback’ atmosphere right in your garden. Tapered legs, cane work and touches of metal can also work well with the overall look. As for the plants, opt for local varieties: back then, bamboo wasn’t imported into Europe! So it’s best to avoid it in this style of garden décor.
The industrial style
With an industrial-style interior, you can embrace a factory-inspired vibe and mix and match styles – with a rustic wooden table and metal chairs, for example. The idea is to combine raw materials (wood, terracotta, concrete, etc.) with black metal, or sometimes coloured metal for a touch of fun and light in your interior design. When it comes to decorative items, add a few elements that evoke a workshop feel: a clock with an exposed mechanism, a garden brazier, a metal fence around the patio…

The minimalist/design style
Are you a fan of minimalism and want to give your garden a stylish, modern feel? Opt for innovative materials such as polypropylene, ceramic, polished concrete and resin.
Whilst the colours of a minimalist garden set are mainly neutral, you can dare to add a few splashes of colour to liven things up. To take it a step further, you could try incorporating decorative items or designer furniture, which are sure to do the trick and become the centrepieces of your outdoor furniture! Here, more is the enemy of better, so we recommend not overloading your space and opting for functional furniture.
The pastoral style
There’s nothing quite like a pastoral style to bring a touch of the countryside to your garden. With its abundance of flowers and wood, this light and airy decor is perfect for making you feel as though you’re right in the heart of the countryside!
For a pastoral-style garden decor, incorporate wooden furniture to bring warmth and a welcoming feel to your outdoor space. The materials should, above all, be natural. Opt for soft or pastel colours, and make sure there’s plenty of greenery: fill the space with a variety of flowers for a guaranteed natural look! To really go all out, you could even arrange a few bales of straw to use as seating.
The Zen style
Are you a fan of Japanese gardens and would you like to bring that style to your garden furniture? The Zen style is perfect for you. The idea is to create a relaxing space right at the edge of your garden, creating an atmosphere where you can switch off from the outside world, but also enjoy peaceful moments with your family around the house.
For a Zen-style design inspired by Japanese gardens, natural materials are essential. Whether it’s stone, wood or sand, the idea is to incorporate elements that bring a sense of calm to your mind within your garden layout. Moreover, water is a constant feature in this type of space: you can hear it flowing gently from a small stone fountain installed in the middle of the terrace. When it comes to furniture, opt for rounded shapes and cosy materials, which bring calm to the garden whilst creating a welcoming corner. For example, a polished concrete coffee table surrounded by pouffes is the perfect choice for a Zen atmosphere. Finally, plants should be used sparingly: place a few on either side of the terrace. Opt for plants with a Japanese or Asian feel, such as bamboo or yucca.
