How to choose your parasol

An essential accessory for the sunny days! Our parasols come in different shapes, colours and sizes. We understand it can be confusing to choose among all these models, so, here are our best tips to help you make the right choice!

1) Shape & size

In our catalogue, you will find round, square and rectangular parasols. The first criterion to consider before making your purchase is the shape of the umbrella. You must ask yourself several questions: What shape is the surface to protect from the sun? Is it to protect a garden table or loungers? Will it be placed on a balcony or a large terrace?

ROUND

The round parasol is the classic model. It is usually used to shade small spaces and is ideal for round tables.

SQUARE OR RECTANGULAR

The square or rectangular umbrella easily fits on a terrace, at an angle, along a wall or over a table. It is modern and suitable for both small and large spaces.

2) Straight parasol or Cantilever parasol?

You must then choose between a straight or a cantilever umbrella, according to your needs and the configuration of your space. Whether they are straight or cantilever, all our umbrellas have an awning. This opening would act as a windbreak in the event of a breeze.

STRAIGHT PARASOL

The straight umbrella with its fixed mast is a classic model. It is ideal for a table with a central hole or to be placed between two loungers. Although some are reclining, the straight parasol is not very mobile. It is not very practical to adapt to the different rhythms of sunshine. The straight umbrella exists in a wide variety of colours and the diameter of its mast can vary depending on the model..

CANTILEVER PARASOL

The sunshade is usually larger and more extensive than the straight parasol's. It is equipped with an articulated arm that inclines, a sliding handle and a cross leg. This umbrella is perfect for terraces because it offers a large shading area. Some models are rotatable 360 ° to follow the sun without the need to move the base. It is very simple to handle.

3) The canvas

The quality of the canvas varies depending on the material, its treatment, and its density. When referring to the density of a canvas, we refer to it in g / m². The higher the base weight, the thicker the fabric is, the more resistant and effectively filters the UV rays. To be well protected, it is estimated that a minimum of 30 UPFs is needed, the maximum being 50+ (UPF = Ultraviolet Protection Factor).

THE MATERIAL

To design the canvas of our parasols we use two materials:

  • Polyester offers good value for money. This synthetic fibre is moisture-resistant and effectively protects against UV. However, its colours tend to tarnish over time. It is therefore advisable to protect the canvas with a cover when you do not use your umbrella. There are several qualities of polyester.
  • Acrylic is a more expensive material but also more durable. It is tinted in the mass, which allows it to keep its colours. The acrylic fabric is water-resistant and does not stain. It also offers good thermal insulation. The acrylic of our parasols is Agora, material produced in Spain, guaranteed 5 years against any discolouration.

TREATMENT

Our canvases contain a water-repellent effect (the water slips on the fabric without penetrating it). In addition, this treatment improves the fabric's resistance to tearing and rubbing and prevents mould growth.

4) The structure

The materials that make up the umbrella structure are very important. They are a determining factor in the choice of your parasol for both the quality and the style of the product.

STEEL

This sturdy metal is coated with a special oven-dried paint (epoxy) that limits the appearance of rust. It will require a little maintenance because the steel must be repainted or treated with paint or an anti-corrosion product at the first traces of rustle.

ALUMINIUM

It is a safe bet. It is a lightweight, strong and rustproof material. It is also practical; you only have to clean it with a damp cloth from time to time.

ANODISED ALUMINIUM

Anodised aluminium has much better anti-corrosion properties than painted aluminium. Besides, its appearance is trendier, and its colour remains almost unchanged during the life of your product.

WOOD

It is an aesthetic material, ideal to give a tropical style to your terrace. It is naturally resistant and is reinforced with a layer of varnish to better withstand the weather. It requires regular maintenance.

FIBREGLASS

It is a material known for its flexibility and lightness.

5) Opening system

Whether a straight or a cantilever model, each parasol is equipped with an opening system of its own.

THE HANDLE

This is the indispensable opening system for heavy umbrellas and possesses a long lifespan. Regarding the material of the handle, it varies depending on the model.

PULLEY SYSTEM

It is less aesthetic than the handle but has the advantage of being more practical. Indeed, in case of a problem, it is easily repaired because it is an external system.

PUSH SYSTEM

It is a system identical to that of umbrellas. It is used for straight umbrellas that are entry-level.

AUTOMATION

Very practical, the automatic opening system is integrated into the mast. Thanks to this, you may open your umbrella just by pulling and lifting the nut. The mechanism takes over to open the umbrella at the highest point. There is no need for retaining pin because the nut is automatically fixed in the open position. To close the umbrella, you may slide the nut down, pulling it. Our automatic opening parasols use A.L.S mechanism, unique and patented.

ELECTRIC

This is the most practical opening system. The sunshade opens remotely, using a remote control.

6) Accessories

Accessories, sold separately, are essential to enjoy your parasol.

The base: the larger the sunshade, the heavier the pedestal must be for ballasting.

The cover protects your parasol when you are not using it. It is sometimes included with the parasol, depending on the model chosen.
