How nice it is to sit on the sofa and relax in front of a show you love! The sofa is an essential part of any living room, which is why we need to choose it sparingly. What better way to get the best sofa than by choosing the right fabric? If you’re not sure what to choose, don’t panic, here are our decorating tips and tricks!

Choosing a fabric sofa depending on its material

When we think of the material of our sofa, we think directly of the fabric of the covering. This is a very important point when it comes to choosing the right sofa. The material will determine the quality, durability and look of your sofa. That’s why there are so many different materials to choose from, so you can select the best possible covering.

The velvet sofa :

Velvet is making a comeback in our interiors and is becoming increasingly trendy! Soft, aesthetic and full of character, it also offers a vintage look that we love to find in our interiors. Very comfortable and pleasant to the touch, it offers different shades of colour depending on the direction of its short pile. Velvet is available in many colours and types for your living room sofa and armchairs. Embossed velvet, for example, gives you a patterned fabric. The only drawback to velvet is that it gets dirty easily, so it needs regular care!

The cotton sofa :

Cotton is the best-known fabric on the market. It’s a material that never ceases to please, thanks to its naturalness and good value for money. Soft and comfortable, cotton offers a wide choice of colours and patterns, so you can find the best possible covering to suit your decorating tastes. Cotton doesn’t attract dust and is easy to wash. On the other hand, it absorbs odors and will tend to fluff over time, so you’ll need to take care with its upkeep.

The linen sofa :

Chic, elegant and delicate, linen has it all, except for its rather expensive price tag. Linen is a material that doesn’t keep you warm; on the contrary, it gives you a feeling of freshness when you sit down. It’s durable, won’t fade over time and is resistant to potential room humidity. However, linen is prone to wrinkling, which can sometimes be pleasing and sometimes a drawback. It all depends on your personal taste.

The wool sofa :

In recent years, wool has become less popular, despite its many advantages. Soft and warm, it adds real charm to any interior. This fabric is water-repellent, and doesn’t absorb water, which limits the risk of stains on the sofa. The only problem is that it can sag and warp over time.

The synthetic sofa :

Resistant, soft and not very messy, synthetic is also water-repellent, reducing the risk of stains on the sofa. This fabric offers a wide choice of colours and patterns. Its cushions, some of which are removable, make it easier to care for your sofa. On top of everything else, synthetic offers great value for money. The only downside is that it lacks the natural feel of cotton and linen, and has a much larger carbon footprint. However, this material tends to use recycled fibers in its composition to reduce its environmental impact.

The microfibre sofa :

Soft and pleasant, microfibre is durable, resistant and inexpensive. It’s a fabric that offers many different renderings, colours and patterns. With it, you can easily imitate aged leather or velvet at low cost. This material doesn’t get dirty quickly and is easy to clean. It’s also water-repellent, so there’s little risk of stains. Microfibre keeps you warm in winter and cool in summer – it’s a fabric that adapts to your needs! The disadvantages are that it gathers dust quickly and can fade when exposed to the sun for too long. You’ll need to dust it regularly and keep it away from windows to preserve its beauty!

Choosing a sofa depending on the colours and patterns

Today, almost all fabrics offer a wide choice of colours and patterns to help you complete and enhance your sofa and interior room. Synthetic and microfibre fabrics, which are less natural, offer a wide choice of colours. You’ll find sober, timeless shades as well as more peppy, modern hues like green or candy pink.

Of course, it’s perfectly possible to find cotton, linen or even velvet sofas in brighter colours like green, yellow or orange. But certain colours are more appreciated on a certain type of fabric. Delicate colours are best appreciated on soft coverings such as linen, cotton or microfibre, while pop colours are best appreciated on velvet or synthetic textiles.

Of course, this is really just a matter of personal taste. When it comes to patterns, synthetic fabrics can be perfect, as they offer you a wide range of possibilities. However, you can also opt for velvet. In fact, embossed velvet offers you the chance to have beautiful patterns on your sofa covering.

Choose a sofa fabric depending on the style of your interior decoration

Choosing a type of fabric is all very well, but it still has to match the overall decor of your room. Yes, it’s a whole atmosphere to create, and the sofa is not to be neglected, as it’s the centerpiece of your space. To do this, you’ll need to determine the overall style to create a certain harmony.

For a retro look :

If you have a vintage interior, the old-world charm of velvet will complement your retro decor. Or opt for covering in pop shades for an even more contemporary look!

For a more industrial design :

When we think of industrial décor, we think directly of leather sofas, so why not go for a microfibre fabric that imitates this material? Synthetics and cotton in dark shades can add that industrial touch we love so much!

For a Scandinavian look :

A Scandinavian interior is one that resembles a mountain chalet, and we love cotton or wool covering for the Nordic, comforting feel of this look! You can also opt for light, plain textiles.

For an authentic decoration :

For a rustic look, what could be better than cotton or velvet covering for that old-fashioned look we love!

For a chic living room :

For a chic living room, linen is the ideal material. Refined and delicate, it’s perfect for a sophisticated decor.

What weight to choose for sofa fabric?

Fabric weight is important for the comfort and durability of the sofa. It defines the thickness of the fabric as well as its weight. The higher the grammage, the higher the quality of your sofa fabric and the longer it will last. For this reason, the choice of fabric weight depends largely on how you intend to use it. For family sofas, which are often used, you should opt for a high grammage, whereas for a more secondary sofa, such as those used in a guest room, you can choose a sofa with a lower grammage, without any worries. On average, a good weight is around 200 g/m2.

In reality, choosing the fabric for your sofa isn’t just a matter of choosing the right material or colour. It’s a whole, a harmony to be created according to your decor and tastes. A good fabric is also a durable fabric, so its grammage is important. Whether you decide on velvet or cotton, the most important thing is to listen to your tastes and desires!
